Why should you use face-washing sponges?

It might seem that makeup removal done only with your hands should be enough, but many beauty bloggers and just regular girls say it’s good to add an additional face-washing product to the routine. Today, we’re going to check out the sponges – what superpowers do they have and are they worth spending our money on?

ADVANTAGES

  1. If you care about the ZERO WASTE philosophy, you will be happy to forget about single-use cotton pads (which are bleached by chemicals) and you’ll move to multiple-use pads. Cellulose sponges in the form of flat slices will do just fine as cotton pads. Many girls use them together with cleansing milk or cleansing gel.
  1. The sponges can be used even up to a few months and they don’t cost that much.
  1. Various sponges increase the efficiency of cosmetics. They also produce foam – so you can use less amount of cosmetics. If you use cleansing milk, mechanical washing (done by the sponges) will also help use less product.
  1. Face-washing sponges and gloves help clean the pores deeply and remove dry patches. The skin is smooth and radiant – and on a healthy-looking skin the makeup also looks much better.
  1. The sponge can also enrich your face care routine in… a massage, which will improve blood circulation and as a result, the colour of your skin.
  1. Sponges also serve as a gentle peeling. They scrub the skin in a delicate way and even though they won’t act just as a dedicated face-peeling, they can be a valuable addition to everyday face care.
  1. Another sponge advantage is its high efficiency in removing face masks. Probably we all know how hard it is to remove a clay mask without rubbing it off the face and messing up all the kitchen (and what kind of relaxation is it if after face-washing you additionally have to clean the bathroom?). Thanks to face-washing sponges you will easily wash every mask off your face.

What kind of face-washing sponge should you choose?

There are many sponges that you can choose among. They vary between themselves in size, shape, porosity, durability, price and material from which they are made of.

Cellulose sponges

Those are probably the most popular. You will buy them practically in every supermarket and drugstore. They can replace popular cotton pads. At first, you might have problems getting used to their size. They’re easy to fold in half though or you can also cut them with scissors to a suitable size. When out of the packaging and in contact with air, cellulose sponges become hard and stiff – that is why, you have to soak them in water before every use and wait for them to be soft and elastic.

Konjac sponges

Konjac, which formal name is amorphophallus konjac, is an Asian plant used for cosmetic gadgets production. It’s advantages are considerable though. This type of face-washing sponge is 100% natural, full of vitamins and minerals, naturally porous, but soft at the same time, suitable even for sensitive skin. However, the internet if full of negative comments on cosmetic pads made of konjac – konjac sponge is much more popular. It also has to be soaked in water before use. The sponge feels very pleasant to the skin and leaves it very well moisturised. It may even turn out to be more of a massage product than a makeup removal one, but it can also be used for it – even though its oval edges may not reach harder areas such as nose wings. Konjac sponge’s big advantage is its plant origin. In the drugstores you will also find sponges with charcoal (for deeper cleansing) or with clay, which provide additional face quality. You could even say that konjac sponges are face care classics.

Natural sea sponges

They can also be bought in drugstores. They’re much more delicate and they don’t exfoliate the skin. They seem eco-friendly, but it’s worth to remember that they’re not suitable for vegans and vegetarians and they’re not cruelty free. Do you remember biology lessons? Sponges are part of this world’s fauna. It’s true, they look like plants and they don’t have neurones, but they’re still one of the oldest animal on this planet. Surely, their advantage is their ability to produce more foam from the cosmetics and they’re highly elastic. When you buy a sponge, make sure it’s naturally yellowish and not too bleached. The bleached sponges will crumble easier, which lowers their durability.

Keeping the hygiene

The sponges‘ disadvantage is keeping their hygiene can be problematic. Face-washing sponges are usually sold without any string for hanging it to dry after use. Leaving them wet in a damp bathroom causes bacteria and fungus multiplication. That is why you should always remember to perforate the sponge and attach a string to it. This way, after using it you can hang it and let it dry. It is also important to wash the sponge off all cosmetic leftovers – the same way as you keep your makeup brushes and makeup sponges clean.

What to avoid?

It’s still not a popular topic, but cosmetics and accessories should be bought in renowned stores and wholesale points. It’s not about choosing luxurious drugstores, regular chain drugstores are good as well. However, websites such as Aliexpress grow in strength – and with them the market for fake products. But these products are just substitutes for the real thing. Made of random materials, untested, unnatural and usually chemically coloured – they definitely do not contain any clay, charcoal, vitamins or minerals. It’s sad but the Chinese fake beauty products market really does not care that they might be harmful to our health. It is never worth it to save money on your own health. Don’t buy products from an unchecked source.
